bioClarity Review: A Review of The 10 Best bioClarity Skincare Products

SKIN CARE REVIEWS

01.05.23DISCLAIMER

bioClarity is an indie skincare brand that was launched in 2016 with the idea of offering a naturally better alternative to traditional acne solutions without the harsh side effects. The brand developed their patented ingredient, Floralux, which infuses the bioClarity skincare products with the regenerative power of chlorophyll.

What are the Best Skin Care Products of 2024?

But is Floralux really the key to smooth, blemish-free skin? And is there any science to back it up? To answer these questions, we’ll have to evaluate the research behind Floralux, as well as the supporting key ingredients in bioClarity products. We’ll also share bioClarity reviews so that you can get an idea of what customers really think of these products.

Which bioClarity Mask is Best?

Based on the bioClarity reviews, it’s clear that the Pore Purifier is the best bioClarity mask. After nearly 400 customer reviews, the bioClarity pore mask has received an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Many of the bioClarity reviews for Pore Purifier mention how it really does to help clear buildup in pores, leaving the skin smoother and clear. For example, one review says, “I really love this face mask!! I do this twice a week and you can feel it working. I love how it cleanses your pores and makes you feel brand new after. Just like going to a spa! Truly love this mask.”

What Are The Key Ingredients in bioClarity Skincare Products?

The signature ingredient that you’ll find throughout the bioClarity skincare collection is the brand’s patented Floralux, also known as chlorophyllin-copper complex, which is derived from chlorophyll (the green pigment in algae and plants).

According to the brand, Floralux penetrates into the dermis (the middle layer of skin) where it protects against free radicals. It also speeds wound healing by slowing the growth of certain anaerobic bacteria on the skin. Unfortunately, the brand doesn’t provide much more information about this ingredient.

When we did a little digging, we discovered there is some research behind the chlorophyllin-copper complex. For example, one human biopsy study tested a gel containing a liposomal dispersion of sodium copper chlorophyllin complex 0.05%, a positive control of tretinoin cream 0.025%, and an untreated negative control. The results of this study suggest that both retinoids and sodium copper chlorophyllin complex have beneficial effects on biomarkers of photoaged skin.

And a 2015 randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology tested a topical gel containing chlorophyllin complex salts (0.066%). The formula was shown to be clinically effective and well tolerated for the treatment of mild-moderate photodamage and solar lentigenes when used for 8 weeks.

While there isn’t extensive research on chlorophyllin-copper complex — aka Floralux, the key ingredient used in bioClarity skincare products — there is some research to suggest that it can help to improve signs of aging and speed wound healing.

As for the other ingredients used in bioClarity skincare products, we noticed that the brand uses tried-and-true ingredients like squalane, jojoba oil, shea butter, vitamin C, sodium hyaluronate, and a variety of botanical extracts.

The only thing to keep in mind before trying bioClarity skincare products is that nearly all of them contain fragrant essential oils. While these ingredients give the product a pleasant scent, it’s important to note that these fragrance ingredients aren’t helping your skin in any way. So why is fragrance a problem in skin care? Let’s look at the science.

All fragrance ingredients (whether natural or synthetic) impart scent through a volatile reaction, and this natural reaction almost always causes a sensitizing reaction on skin. In fact, according to a 2016 publication in the scholarly journal Dermatitis, nearly 80 essential oils have caused contact allergy.

Even if you don’t have a full blown reaction to the ingredient, the damage may still be occurring every day. Ultimately, this can cause mild problems for your skin in the short term and worse problems in the long term.

Where to Buy bioClarity Skincare Products?

bioClarity skincare products are sold on the brand’s website, as well as some third party online retailers such as Ulta and Amazon.

What is The bioClarity Return Policy?

bioClarity offers a 30-day money back guarantee.

Is bioClarity Cruelty Free?

Yes, bioClarity is cruelty free and the products are officially Leaping Bunny Certified. Leaping Bunny Certification means bioClarity skincare products are free of animal testing at every stage of product development.

bioClarity Reviews

bioClarity reviews on the brand’s website are overall very positive, with most products receiving four and five star ratings. We already discussed the reviews for the popular bioClarity pore mask, so let’s take a look at another popular product: SunFilter, a bioClarity sunscreen.

SunFilter has received an average rating of 4.64 out of 5 stars after more than 800 customer reviews. The positive reviews for this bioClarity sunscreen mention that it’s lightweight yet still provides good hydration. Plus, it doesn’t leave a white cast like most mineral sunscreens do.

For example, one review says, “I love this sunscreen. I’ve been using it everyday for about a month. It has no white cast and it’s super light. My skin does not have a bad reaction to it, and I can feel my skin staying healthy and hydrated throughout the day.”

However, some bioClarity reviews for SunFilter mention that it leaves skin looking oily. For example, one reviewer shares, “I really notice the difference this product makes in protecting my skin. I tan quickly and don’t want to damage my skin at a young age. I have combination skin. A little goes a really long way! The only thing I dislike about the product is it makes my face look oily. It may be caused by my skin type. But I will continue to use and recommend this fantastic product.”

Our Verdict

Overall, we think that bioClarity skincare products are formulated well, although we wish the brand would offer fragrance free products.

Pros

  • Reasonably priced
  • Research supports the use of Floralux (chlorophyllin-copper complex)
  • Many positive bioClarity reviews
  • bioClarity is cruelty free

Cons

  • Many bioClarity products contain fragrant essential oils

What Are Some Alternatives to bioClarity Products?

bioClarity may not be for everyone, either because the products didn’t react well with your skin, or you’re more interested in anti-aging skincare products. If that’s the case, we’d recommend Formulyst. Formulyst maximizes the use of powerful ingredients and minimizes the use of superficial ones, resulting in clinically advanced skincare solutions that help promote healthy, more youthful-looking skin.

For hydrated and dewy looking skin, try Formulyst Super Hyaluronic Water Moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid helps keep skin plumped, hydrated, and dewy looking. This oil free formula is packed with multiple types of hyaluronic acid and it works as a moisture magnet by drawing water to the skin.

Another brand that balances the power of plants with cutting edge science is Carrot & Stick. Not only is Carrot & Stick good for your skin, it is also good for the environment as the formulas skip harmful chemicals commonly found in skin care products.

Bioclarity Clarifying Masque Review

The Bioclarity Clarifying Masque is claimed to fight breakouts and purify pores, leaving you with a refreshed, tighter, toned appearance. Due to these benefits, this Bioclarity mask is recommended for those with normal, oily, and acne prone skin. It is a clay mask that contains kaolin, a type of white white clay, as the key ingredient. After being applied to the skin, kaolin helps remove excess oil and dead skin that can clog pores. Kaolin also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce redness and swelling around existing blemishes. When you wash off the Bioclarity mask, kaolin also functions as a gentle abrasive to exfoliate the skin.

One unique ingredient in this Bioclarity mask is Floralux, an exclusive blend of chlorophyll, copper, and antioxidants that’s shown to soothe skin, fight blemishes, and visibly reduce redness and hyperpigmentation. The formula also contains micro-silver, which has antimicrobial properties to help fight the bacteria responsible for acne. A final key ingredient we’d like to point out is niacinamide, the amide form of vitamin B3. Niacinamide is a multitasking ingredient that provides numerous benefits to the skin. For instance, niacinamide has the ability to repair the skin barrier and improve skin moisture, as well as reduce inflammation, blotchiness, hyperpigmentation, acne, and wrinkling.

INGREDIENTS

Bioclarity Cleanser Review

The Bioclarity Cleanser is a gentle, foaming facial cleanser that is said to effectively wash away makeup, dirt, oil, and environmental pollutants and leave your skin soft and smooth. Like most cleansers, the Bioclarity Cleanser contains surfactants as the primary ingredients, including sodium c14-16 olefin sulfonate, cocamidopropyl betaine, and cocamidopropyl cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine. A surfactant molecule contains one end that is hydrophilic (attracted to water) and one end that is lipophilic (attracted to oil). This allows surfactants to attract and suspends oils, dirt, and other impurities that have accumulated on the skin and wash them away, leaving the skin clean. The Bioclarity Cleanser also includes several soothing botanical extracts, such as chamomile, green tea, and cucumber. All of these extracts have anti-inflammatory properties, which means they should help to calm skin redness and irritation.

INGREDIENTS

Bioclarity SunFilter Review

Bioclarity SunFilter is the brand’s sunscreen that not only protects your skin from the sun’s UV rays, but also blue light and environmental stressors. It is a non-nano 100% mineral zinc oxide sunscreen that provides SPF 30 protection. Zinc oxide is classified as a physical sunscreen because it protects your your skin by using physical UV filters to block or deflect UV light. This Bioclarity sunscreen also contains plenty of antioxidants, such as green tea, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Antioxidants limit oxidative damage from free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines on the skin.

The Bioclarity sunscreen formula also includes emollients that help to keep your skin soft and moisturized without feeling greasy, for example, squalane and jojoba oil. The high concentration of squalane in this formula will help to replenish and strengthen the skin barrier. Jojoba oil nourishes the skin and helps to maintain skin hydration while also calming inflammation. Thanks to these non-comedogenic emollients, the Bioclarity sunscreen is ideal for blemish-prone skin, although it can be used by all skin types.

INGREDIENTS

Bioclarity Restore Gel Review

Bioclarity Restore Gel is a gel-based treatment designed to help fight breakouts as part of the brand’s Clear Skin Routine. It is said to help visibly reduce redness from acne, even skin tone and texture, and leave a dewy finish. The formula contains a very high concentration of witch hazel hazel water (it’s the third highest concentration ingredient). Witch hazel contains tannins that impart astringent properties, resulting in a constricting and drying effect when applied to the skin. They work by cross-linking with keratin proteins, creating an invisible film that can temporarily degrease skin, tighten and tone skin, and minimize the appearance of enlarged pores. However, it should be noted that tannins can cause irritation and sensitization reactions with some people.

Bioclarity Restore Gel also contains a powerful antioxidant that you don’t see too often in skin care products: ergothioneine. Ergothioneine is a naturally occuring amino acid that has a strong protective effect when applied to the skin. Specifically, it has been reported that skin cells have the ability to uptake ergothioneine to strengthen their natural antioxidant defense system. In addition, ergothioneine provides mild protection against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays (but it’s still recommended to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen even if you do use products with ergothioneine).

INGREDIENTS

Bioclarity Hydrate Moisturizer Review

Bioclarity Hydrate is a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that is said to soften and hydrate the skin without excess oiliness or stickiness, and it’s non-comedogenic so it won’t clog your pores. Like many Bioclarity skin care products, this formula contains Floralux, an exclusive blend of chlorophyll, copper, and antioxidants that’s shown shown to soothe skin, fight blemishes, and visibly reduce redness and hyperpigmentation. Additional ingredients in this Bioclarity moisturizer that can help to reduce hyperpigmentation while brightening the skin tone are tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (a vitamin C derivative) and licorice root extract.

This Bioclarity moisturizer is also packed with beneficial emollients, such as shea butter, jojoba oil, argan oil, and ceramides. We’d like to highlight the importance of ceramides, a family of waxy lipid molecules that are naturally produced by the skin and are vital in supporting the skin barrier. The skin barrier maintains epidermal hydration and serves as a barrier that responds to environmental stressors, infections, irritants, and allergens. Topical application of ceramides can help to replenish ceramide levels, thus restoring the skin’s natural barrier.

INGREDIENTS

Bioclarity Acne Treatment Gel Review

The Bioclarity Acne Treatment Gel is formulated to treat mild to moderate acne (including whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and hormonal acne) and excess oiliness. The formula includes 2% salicylic acid as the active ingredient. Salicylic acid is a type of beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that works by softening and dissolving keratin, keratin, a protein found in the skin that acts as a “glue” to keep cells together. This allows salicylic acid to exfoliate the skin and slough off dead skin cells. Salicylic acid also has the ability to penetrate deep into pores, where it helps to loosen clogs and allows oil to flow out more freely. Thus, salicylic acid is known to break down blackheads and whiteheads. The Bioclarity Acne Treatment Gel also contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that can further help exfoliate the skin while also helping to improve skin hydration.

There are several soothing ingredients in the Bioclarity Acne Treatment Gel that can help calm redness and irritation from existing blemishes. One example is oat kernel extract, which contains avenanthramides, a group of active polyphenol antioxidants that provide anti-inflammatory, anti-redness, anti-itch, and antihistamine effects when applied to the skin.

INGREDIENTS

Bioclarity Zen Review

Bioclarity Zen is a calming serum that is said to put rough, blotchy, irritated skin into a “state of peace and calm”. Thus, this formula is designed for anyone with redness, hyperpigmentation, and blotchy skin. Bioclarity Zen contains a high concentration of niacinamide, which is known to help repair the the skin barrier and improve skin moisture, as well as reduce inflammation, blotchiness, hyperpigmentation, acne, and wrinkling. Another key ingredient that helps fight redness and hyperpigmentation is Floralux (chlorophyllin-copper complex).

Bioclarity Zen is also packed with botanical extracts, such as licorice root, lentil, apple fruit, and burdock root, just to name a few. Licorice root extract is well known for its anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties. But licorice can also provide a considerable skin brightening effect thanks to a component called glabridin. Lentil extract hydrates, balances oily skin, and refines pores. Apple fruit extract contains pectin, a type of fiber, that has been shown in studies to promote epidermal growth and improve the skin barrier function. Burdock root has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and also has the ability to regulate sebum (oil) production.
